ABBA's "Dancing Queen" Tops Chart
Published on 30 October 2014
ABBA's "Dancing Queen" has been voted the nation's favourite floorfiller, the song guaranteed to get people dancing.
The enduring disco anthem romped to the title ahead of Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean" with "Twist And Shout" by The Beatles completing the top three and one of just two British acts in the Top 10.
However, the song most likely to empty the dance floor was deemed to be naff No 1 "Agadoo" by Black Lace.
The research by specialist insurer, Musicguard, also found major variations in Britain's musical tastes.
While ABBA overwhelmingly topped the charts across most of the nation, "Billie Jean" is a firm favourite in London and Northern Ireland. However, "Twist And Shout" was the top pop pick in East Anglia, the North East and Yorkshire and The Humber, while "500 Miles" by The Proclaimers scored the most votes in the band's native Scotland.
Andrew Savigar, Musicguard's managing director, said: "It's surprising to see just two British acts on the hit list. According to the British Phonographic Industry, last year saw British acts make up eight out of the top 10 best-selling albums in the UK. DJs up and down the country will understand that it's not always the 'obvious' choices that are crowd pleasers; it's all about reading the room and making the right choice".
The top 10 songs most likely to get the nation boogying:
1. "Dancing Queen" ABBA
2. "Billie Jean" Michael Jackson
3. "Twist And Shout" The Beatles
4. "I Wanna Dance With Somebody" Whitney Houston
5. "500 Miles" The Proclaimers
6. "Get Lucky" Daft Punk
7. "Crazy In Love" Beyonce
8. "I Gotta Feeling" Black Eyed Peas
9. "Summer Of 69" Bryan Adams
10. "Don't Stop Believing" Journey
