A Year In Review 2014
Published on 1 January 2015
Well, 2014 was certainly a fabbatastic year for Swede Dreamz with ABBA tribute shows throughout the UK.
The band kicked off 2014 at the Cairndale Hotel in Dumfries, now traditionally the first of many ABBA shows here throughout a typical year. In mid January the band appeared at the Mercure Hotel in Norwich, the first of three dates here during the year. January also saw the band perform at a number of private birthday parties.
The first show of February was a corporate event (Scottish Federation of Housing Associations) at the Apex Hotel in Dundee which was quickly followed by huge show at Wolverhampton Racecourse in the West Midlands. Benny was delighted to take show to Crook in County Durham (Benny was raised here many years earlier).
March was just as hectic with shows in Inverness, Dundee (again), Cumbria and Birmingham. The band also recorded new promotional showreel at Workington’s Carnegie Theatre.
April was ABBA Month (it was forty years ago this month since ABBA won the Eurovision Song Contest in Brighton)! ABBA – The Official International Anniversary Party took place at London’s Tate Modern and there was much interest in all things ABBA which, in turn, generated a lot more enquires for Swede Dreamz ABBA shows. Performance this month included Lancashire, Derbyshire, Cumbria, Dumfriesshire and Midlothian.
May was rather hectic with two Warner Leisure Hotel shows (Gunton Hall Hotel and Corton Hotel, both in Lowestoft) as well as shows in Cumbria and the West Midlands. The band even managed to fit in photo shoot for some new publicity images. May was certainly all go!
June saw a mixture of public and private events and shows up and down the UK. The first show was grand birthday party at the Marriott Victoria & Albert Hotel in the centre of Manchester. Shows in Norwich (again), Larbert (Falkirk), Cumbria and Birmingham followed. The highlight of June (and one of the highlights of the year) was Swede Dreamz ABBA tribute show performance at Cumbria Pride.
July was, quite frankly, a crazy month ABBA-wise with the first of a string of Blackpool show dates and an appearance at Seaham Festival in County Durham together with corporate for Wowcher in Wiltshire (together with X-Factor’s Kitty Brucknell) and Ockham in Surrey. Unfortunately, the adverse wet weather conditions resulted in Swede Dreamz ABBA tribute show at Burntwood Wakes Festival being cancelled.
August has, until this year, traditionally always been a quieter month. A generous mixture of weddings and hotel party nights saw the band performing in Cumbria, Lancashire, Bristol, Northumberland , Sheffield, Middlesbrough and Herefordshire. The highlight of August has got to be Swede Dreamz ABBA tribute show at Rockerbie Festival in Lockerbie, Dumfriesshire. The sight of several hundred rockers boogying to ABBA’s Mamma Mia, I Do I Do I Do I Do I Do, Honey Honey and SOS will live with us for a long time to come.
And so to September and bookings in both Inverness and Norwich (on the same day), Worcester, Birmingham, Lancashire, Aberdeenshire, a corporate event for the Stirling Group in Brighton and fabbatastic sold out theatre show at the beautiful Priory Theatre in Warwickshire. Not quite sure how, but the band even found time to fit in second promotional photo shoot.
October was equally busy with ABBA tribute shows in Wharfdale (Yorkshire), a Greek wedding reception at the beautiful Manor By The Lake in Cheltenham, first appearance for Swede Dreamz ABBA tribute band at The River Rooms in Stourbridge (already rebooked for January 2015), Dumfries, Manchester, Carlisle and Crieff (Perthshire). There are two highlights this month. The first being ABBA show on Isle of Skye and the mad dash back to mainland before they closed the bridge due to weather conditions. October was breast cancer awareness month and the second highland has to be the sold out fundraising event at Sixways Stadium in Worcester.
November was equally exciting with ABBA shows in Birmingham, Carlisle, a sold-out charity fund-raising event in Workington (Cumbria), Dumfriesshire, a gig in a Newcastle upon Tyne fire station (literally), a private star-studded birthday bash on the banks of the River Thames in the heart of London and the launch of our brand new sister Thank ABBA For The Music theatre show with cast members performing live at Stafford’s Christmas Lights Switch-On show and an audience of over 20,000. The final show of the year saw the band performing show at Wigton’s Christmas Lights Switch On show.
And so to December and what felt like a never-ending run of shows throughout the UK. First up was Swede Dreamz ABBA performance at the News & Star Concert For The Community event at the Sands Centre in Carlisle (afternoon and evening performance). This was the third time the band have been invited to perform at this event.
The remainder of December was a non-stop run of ABBA Christmas party nights after party nights with the occasional theatre show and birthday celebration date thrown in for good measure. The band were delighted to be invited back to the Radstone Hotel (formerly the Shawlands Park Hotel) in Larkhall after initial sell-out ABBA show in December 2013. Three dates at the Cairndale Hotel in Dumfries, two back-to-back dates at the Great Barr Hotel in Birmingham and a fabbatastic party night at The Point in Sunderland all followed. The final pre-Christmas show for 2014 was at the Warner Leisure Nidd Hall Hotel in North Yorkshire by which time the band were (to put it nicely) completely shattered! Thank you to the superb entertainments team at Nidd Hall Hotel who, as usual, looked after us so well. There were post Christmas ABBA shows in Dundee and Carlisle before private birthday party in rural north Northumberland (with personalised LED dance floor) and New Year’s Eve Party Night celebrations at both Shap Wells Hotel in Cumbria (band number one) and the Ravensworth Arms in Gateshead (band number two). Yes, such is the demand for a Swede Dreamz ABBA show we can now put two identical shows on the road at any one time, each show delivering the same high expectations and professionalism that our clients and supporters have come to expect.
Swede Dreamz celebrated ten fabbatastic years as one of the UK’s leading and most authentic ABBA tribute acts on Boxing Day Friday, 26th December 2014. We can still recall that fun-filled night in Keswick. We never thought for one moment what was initially planned as a fun-filled ABBA sketch would lead us where we are today.
So, that was 2014. Thank you to everyone who has supported Swede Dreamz ABBA tribute band, not only during the last year but from the very start of the journey. We really wouldn’t be here now without the support and commitment from our many clients and agents as well as the professionalism and commitment from band members.
We have lots of exciting shows and events coming up in 2015 including a number of huge shows which we’re finding very difficult to keep quiet about (understandably, we’re instructed not to give details of these events until official announcements from event organisers). We’re also delighted to be working with our regular clients again in the coming year including the Great Barr Hotel in Birmingham, the Cairndale Hotel & Leisure Centre in Dumfries, Stanwix Park Holiday Centre in Cumbria and the Mercure Hotel in Norwich to mention but a few. We’ll also be launching Thank ABBA For The Music, our sister show complete with live backing band, stage projection, etc to theatres around the UK from July 2015. Check-out the website at www.thankabbaforthemusic.co.uk for further details.
So, that’s 2014 all done and dusted. Thank you again to everyone for your support and here’s to an equally fabbatastic 2015 and beyond …
