It’s official! After almost ten years, the smash-hit jukebox movie Mamma Mia The Movie is to finally get a sequel. Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth and Amanda Seyfried are among the stars who are rumoured to reprise their roles in the new movie, which will be called Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again.
First released in 2008, Mamma Mia The Movie is now one of the most successful films ever at the UK box office. It was adapted from the hit West End show of the same name, which is one of the longest running musicals ever. The first film was set in Greece and told the tale of a bride-to-be's attempts to find her real father. It featured no less than twenty of ABBA's songs including Dancing Queen, The Name Of The Game and Super Trouper.
Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again is expected to be released in July 2018, a decade after the original.
Producers say the new film will feature a number of ABBA tracks which were not in the original movie. ABBA members Bjorn Ulvaeus and Benny Anderson have been heavily involved in both the film and musical productions of Mamma Mia. It is believed that they will play a active role in creating the sequel which will be written and directed by Ol Parker, who wrote The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel.
ABBA first found fame when they won the 1974 Eurovision Song Contest with the song Waterloo. They went on to become one of the most successful groups of the late 70s and early 80s and dominated the charts around the world. The had nine UK number one singles between 1974 and 1980. ABBA Gold - Greatest Hits, released in 1992, is now one of the UK's biggest-selling albums of all-time.
